Jupiter Systems wins CITEM plum

Jupiter Systems Inc. received the Best Consumer Application award in the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM) sponsored e-services award.

Jupiter Systems Inc. (JSI) is a Philippine-based IT company dedicated to delivering business solutions for medium to large companies globally. JSI is one of the most experienced software houses in the Philippines and was one of the pioneers of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) in the country. SAP Chief Quits

SAP AG Chief Executive Leo Apotheker resigned as the German software company said it would return to a dual-CEO structure. The company said it had “reached a mutual agreement” with Mr. Apotheker, a 20-year veteran of SAP, not to renew his contract after less than a year as solo chief executive.

Mr. Apotheker was appointed as co-chief executive, alongside Mr. Kagermann in 2008, and became the sole chief executive in May of last year.

IBM launches eight-core Power7 chip

IBM announced the new POWER7 systems designed to manage the most demanding emerging applications, ranging from smart electrical grids to real-time analytics for financial markets.

The new systems incorporate a number of industry-unique technologies for the specialized demands of new applications and services that rely on processing an enormous number of concurrent transactions and data while analyzing that information in real time.

Facebook introduces Slideshow

Facebook recently made available a new prototype application named Slideshow.

Facebook Slideshow does what it sounds like – you get the ability to watch photo albums in a slideshow.

After you enable this prototype, you get a new option named Play while checking out photos of your friends and relatives. Slideshow enables a “Play” button on Facebook Photo pages which initiates a slideshow of the set of photos you are viewing.

Facebook celebrates six anniversary with a new home page

On its sixth year, Facebook announced that it has surpassed 400 million members, and launched a redesigned home page for its users.

“Today we’re celebrating our sixth birthday, and this week there will be 400 million people on Facebook,” CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg wrote on the company’s blog.

The redesign adds more navigation features to the top and left-side menus. The top navigation menu now includes notifications, requests and messages, while the left-side menu offers a Photos dashboard and a Friends dashboard.

Lenovo swings to $80 million profit in quarter

Lenovo Group Ltd. said it swung to a third-quarter profit of $79.52 million, helped by strong growth in PC shipments to emerging markets, including China

Lenovo attributed its vastly improved results to strong PC sales in its home market of China, contributing to a worldwide PC shipments increase of 42% year-on-year. Laptop sales accounted for 63% of Lenovo’s overall revenue.

Lenovo’s PC shipments to the mainland jumped 41% in the quarter from a year earlier, lifting its share of the market 2.8 points to 33.5%, the biggest-ever by a single company.

Linus Torvalds uses Google Nexus One smartphone

Linus Torvalds has revealed on his blog that he is now using a Google Nexus One smartphone. Linus said in a blog post about his decision to purchase the Nexus One:

“But I have to admit, the Nexus One is a winner. I wasn’t enthusiastic about buying a phone on the internet sight unseen, but the day it was reported that it finally had the pinch-to-zoom thing enabled, I decided to take the plunge. I’ve wanted to have a GPS unit for my car anyway, and I thought that Google navigation might finally make a phone useful.”

Microsoft paraded new line of Windows Phone

Microsoft Philippines announced the availability of a new line of Windows phones that are available in a broad range of styles and prices. People can also connect to a new service that allows them to to back uo and share data from their phone to the web with My Phone.

MyPhone is a free service that helps people manage and back up the invaluable information stored on their phone and provides peace of mind and an easy restore option in the event of a lost or damaged phone. People can also publish their photos from the My Phone website or their phone directly to Windows Live, Facebook, Myspace and Flickr.

During the said launch, handset manufacturers like HTC, CherryMobile and Sony Ericsson paraded their Windows Phone offerings.
