Vista second OS to fall to hackers in security contest

First it was OSX, next to fall is Microsoft Vista.

Shane Macaulay and his friends Derek Callaway and Alexander Sotirov of Security Objectives compromise and was able to gain control of the Windows Vista laptop usingt a previously undiscovered flaw in the latest version of Adobe’s Flash software, that won the group the Fujitsu laptop and the $5,000 cash prize.

The competition is part of CanSecWest PWN to OWN contest where the main purpose of this contest is to responsibly unearth new vulnerabilities within these systems so that the affected vendor(s) can address them.

Yahoo launches new web based destination named Shine

Yahoo has announced the launch of their new web based destination named Shine.

The online company said that this new online portal is targeted at women between ages 25 and 54.

Apple Releases New Beta Version of iPhone SDK

Apple has released a second version of its iPhone SDK. It is available immediately as a a 1.3GB download to registered developers on Apple’s developer site and it features Interface Builder, Xcode IDE, Instruments, iPhone simulator, frameworks and samples, compilers, and Shark analysis tool.

The Apple SDK ships with firmware 1.2, which can be run via an emulator. Firmware 2.0, with all the enterprise functionality, was only made available to corporate testers already installed on real iPhones.

NEO launches eXplore Netbook PC

NEO recently launched the first locally Intel-Powered Netbook PC called the NEO eXplore.

NEO xplore PCs are being sold at PHP 16,999.00 ($425). It comes with 900Mhz Intel Celeron M Processor, 7-inch display screen, 512MB to 1GB memory, and 30GB of hard disk storage. It also sports a water-resistant keyboard.

Creative accuses Asus in Misleading Customers on EAX Drivers

Creative Labs said that rival hardware manufacturer Asus is misleading its customers by claiming that new drivers for Asus sound cards support EAX, a set of environmental enhancements for sound in games.

Creative Labs added that the new Asus drivers are falsely reporting EAX 5 capabilities in order to get these games to output 3D audio on Asus sound cards. Asus customers are not getting a genuine EAX Advanced HD experience with this driver update.

MacBook Air hacked in two minutes

Duringin the second annual Pwn2Own hacking contest at the CanSecWest conference in Vancouver where competitors tried to hack Windows, Linux and Apple computers, the Macbook Air was the first to be compromised, taking the winner just two minutes to break into Apple’s new thin notebook.

Charlie Miller took only 2 minutes to win the $10,000 cash prize (and the MacBook Air) by discovering and exploiting a previously unknown vulnerability in the Safari Web browser.

YouTube launches analytics tool

Google has announced a new metrics tool for YouTube users that will allow users to view detailed statistics about the videos that they uploaded.

YouTube Insight is available to all YouTube users, partners and advertisers and can be accessed via the ‘My Account’ page, by clicking first on ‘Videos, Favorites, Playlists’ and then ‘About this video’ to the right of the listed videos.

OpenOffice.org 2.4 update released

OpenOffice is now in version 2.4 and it is available as a free download for Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

The developers said that this update is mostly an incremental upgrade with small feature updates in the applications present in this office productivity suite.
