Windows Mobile 6.5 in the works

Sanjay Jha, Motorola’s co-Chief executive and chief executive of mobile devices was quoted saying something about Windows Mobile 6.5 during the company’s financial reporting.

“Windows Mobile 6 has not delivered the experience that I think Apple has been able to deliver, but as you look at the plan that is Windows Mobile 7 and even 6.5, I think there are significant new added features which will help the platform.” said Jha.

Google updates Chrome to version 0.3

Google has completed a new beta release of its browser. Users of previous versions should automatically receive Chrome 0.3.154.9 via the update feature found in the “About Google Chrome” menu item.

The update closes a URL spoofing hole that could be exploited for phishing attacks. It also redesigned the behaviour when downloading executable files (.exe, .bat, etc.) also aims at providing more security.

Symantec to layoff workers

Symantec has announced it will lay off around 4.5% of its workforce before the end of the year, as it seeks to cut costs in preparation for a slowdown in spending.

Symantec’s shares recently took a battering, falling 17.7% after the company played cautious over third quarter earnings.

Motorola to streamline operation

Motorola announced plans to trim down its operations by reducing costs, streamlining products and delaying a spinoff of the handset business.

The company reportedly plans to slash about 3,000 jobs, nearly 2,000 in the handset division alone. The company also will reduce its focus on certain markets, such as Europe, while stepping up emphasis in China and North and South America.

Motorola also said the company will have to delay spinoff plans because of macroeconomic concerns.

Panasonic may acquire Sanyo Electronics

Market sources are stating that Panasonic might be in talks to acquire a majority stake in smaller rival Sanyo Electric.

Panasonic is said to be in talks with Goldman Sachs and some other shareholders in the company including Daiwa Securities SMBC, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp.
