Google and Facebook have separately announced the general availability of their respective data portability programs. Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect are generally designed to extend social-networking capabilities broadly across the web.

Amazon announced that they’re shutting down one of its web services – Alexa Web Search.
Amazon has sent an email to developers using Alexa stating that the reason for the closing is low usage.

Google has released a new Gmail gadget for its Google Desktop product. The new gadget will allow users to read, search and send Gmail messages while in Google Desktop.
Google Desktop provides users full-text search over email, files, music, photos, chats, Gmail and Web pages viewed.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the company remained interested in acquiring Yahoo’s search business and would rather do a deal “sooner than later.”
Ballmer added that if in case the deal with Yahoo pushes through, Google will have a formidable competitor.
