Microsoft to shut down Encarta

Microsoft made the announcement today that it’s pulling the plug on its Encarta site as part of its MSN services. Furthermore, Microsoft will also cease to sell Microsoft Student and Encarta Pemium software products worldwide by June 2009.

Microsoft said the decision to exit the Encarta business was part of Microsoft’s goal to deliver the most effective and engaging resources.

Adobe and Facebook are announcing a formal partnership to make it simpler for developers to create Flash applications, by making available Actionscript 3 Client Library for Facebook Platform.

The platform for building apps on the social network. This library will enable developers to use Flash to create more compelling apps. This will prove useful as many top Facebook app and game developers have built their products in Flash since Facebook launched.

Google has signed a deal with Walt Disney to bring their content to the video sharing service YouTube.

YouTube would now offer content from Walt Disney services like ABC Entertainment, ABC News, ABC Family, SOAPnet, and ESPN. The deal allows for short duration videos and the two companies would share the revenues generated from the delivery.

WD acquires SSD Maker Silicon Systems

Western Digital Corp. (WD) announced that it has completed a $65 million cash acquisition of SiliconSystems, Inc., a supplier of solid-state drives for the embedded systems market. Integration into WD begins immediately, with SiliconSystems now becoming known as the WD Solid-State Storage business unit, complementing WD’s existing Branded Products, Client Storage, Consumer Storage and Enterprise Storage business units.

SiliconSystems’ product portfolio includes solid-state drives with SATA, EIDE, PC Card, USB and CF interfaces in 2.5-inch, 1.8-inch, CF and other form factors. SiliconSystems’ intellectual property and technical expertise will provide additional building blocks for future products to address emerging opportunities in WD’s existing markets.
