Report: Microsoft Could Buy AOL?

Posted: June 6, 2010 in Tech

Shares of AOL rose 1.3 percent despite a massive sell-off in the broader indexes after reports circulated that Microsoft is ready to purchase the popular web portal, which would then be used to outsource web search to the Bing search engine. AOL is valued at about $2.3 billion.

AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has disclosed that the company has stepped up its efforts to enter into a new search engine deal. According to Armstrong, the company has held several meetings with Google officials.

While those discussions are still ongoing, the conclusion could be an outright sale of the company to Microsoft. Both AOL and Microsoft declined comment on the matter.

A California mother whose children ( then 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son) were kidnapped 15 years ago was reunited with them through Facebook. Authorities suspect the children were taken by their father, Faustino Utrera, when they were toddlers.

Utrera was arrested and the children were placed in the custody of the Department of Children and Families. With the father in jail, custody of the two teenagers was given to their mother.

Adobe has issued a security advisory about a “critical” vulnerability in its Flash Player and Adobe Reader and Acrobat products. A critical vulnerability exists in Adobe Flash Player 10.0.45.2 and earlier versions for Windows, Macintosh, Linux and Solaris operating systems, and the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating systems.

This vulnerability (CVE-2010-1297) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system. Adobe says the problem will allow attackers to take control of people’s computers. Adobe said that there had been reports of the hole actually being exploited and that an official patch was not yet available.

In a speech at the Merrill Lynch Technology conference, HP CEO Mark Hurd said that its recent acquisition of smartphone manufacturer Palm had nothing to do with getting into the smartphone business. “We didn’t buy Palm to be in the smartphone business. I tell people that, but it doesn’t seem to resonate well. We bought it for the IP,” Hurd said.

Hurd explained that HP acquired Palm for its intellectual property and patent portfolio, saying that Palm’s WebOS is “one of the two ground-up pieces of software that is built as a web operating environment.”

HP will use the intellectual property behind Palm’s webOS operating system to create a common platform for its range of small web-connected devices including tablet PCs and printers.
