Wikia debuts open-source search engine

Wikia, Inc. announced that co-founder Jimmy Wales project to create a new search platform founded on open-source search protocols and human collaboration is now open to contributions from everyone.

The Wikia Search project, which is now live and can be found at http://www.wikia.com/, officially launched in alpha form earlier today following a brief private testing period.

In addition to executing basic search queries, users can also do traditional social networking activities, such as creating a personal profile, adding friends, sharing photos and managing privacy settings. Anyone is able to discuss and rank search results, write and edit Mini Articles and more.

Napster Shifts To MP3 Format

Napster Inc. announced that it would shift its complete download sales catalog on its PC service to the MP3 format in the second calendar quarter of 2008.

Napster said that all single track and album sales will soon be exclusively available in the MP3 format, which will be compatible with all MP3 players and music phones like iPod and iPhone.

Warner and New Line Goes Blu-ray

Warner Bros. and sister company New Line’s announcements announced that they will go Blu-ray only.

Warner Bros. studio joins Walt Disney Co. and News Corp.’s Fox in backing Blu-ray exclusively.  Viacom Inc.’s Paramount Pictures, uses HD DVD, as does DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. and General Electric Co.’s Universal Pictures.

Motorola, Inc. reported that it has signed a definitive deal for the purchase of Soundbuzz for undisclosed terms.

The company expects the acquisition to close in the first quarter of 2008, subject to customary conditions.
