Dell earnings down 17 percent

Dell has posted a surprisingly steep drop in quarterly earnings, sending its shares tumbling and sparking fears of weakness in the whole tech sector.

Dell had become more conservative with technology spending in the face of a weak economy, particularly slow demand had spread to Europe and Asia.

Dell’s profit fell 17% in the second quarter ended 1 August, to $616 million, from the restated net income of $746 million in the second quarter of 2007.

Microsoft SkyMarket coming soon

Following the success of the iPhone’s App Store and the latest announcement of Google’s Android Market, Microsoft is preparing to join the new and exciting space of mobilke market via Microsoft Skymarket.

The Skymarket will be launched together with Windows Mobile 7, which is planned for late 2009.

Intel Acquires Opened Hand

INTEL has announced that they are now acquiring Linux Company Opened Hand.

Opened Hand specializes in providing mobile Linux development and services.

After the acquisition, this new unit of Intel would work for the Moblin Software Platform community. This platform is being developed for the Intel Atom processor aimed at mobile internet devices.

Microsoft to slash Xbox 360 price

Microsoft plan to slash Xbox 360 prices by nearly 30 percent.

This move will undercut Nintendo’s Wii, as Microsoft lower the price of the Xbox 360’s Arcade model by 8,000 yen to 19,800 yen.

This move will make Microsoft’s console the first among competing consoles to carry a price tag less than 20,000 yen.

Veoh wins Copyright Lawsuit

A federal court has dismissed a copyright infringement claim against video-hosting site Veoh, saying that the company had done what was required under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) to respect copyrights.

Adult entertainment company Io Group filed suit against Veoh when ten of its videos showed up on the site, but did not first file a takedown notice, as is stipulated under the DMCA.
