New Twitter worm targets celebrities

Posted: April 20, 2009 in Tech

Micro-blogging site Twitter announced that a new variant of the Mikeyy worm is currently making the rounds.

“We are currently addressing a new variant of the Mikeyy worm,” Twitter wrote on its @spam feed. “Please avoid viewing the profile of users posting uncharacteristic or otherwise suspicious tweets.” The worm is reportedly referencing the account identities of various celebrities, including Ashton Kutcher and TV talkshow queen Oprah Winfrey.

“Mikeyy (referring to Michael ‘Mikeyy’ Mooney, the 17-year old hacker) proved two things by unleashing his computer worm – firstly, that there was an untapped problem with Twitter, and secondly that he had no problem with acting irresponsibly,” said Graham Cluley, senior security consultant at Sophos.
