The country’s leading computer providers Acer, Microsoft, Intel and Villman Computers teamed up to open the country’s first high-end ‘Gaming Zone’. Located at the SM Cyberzone North Edsa, all 40 Acer computers are powered by Intel Core i7 and running Windows 7 RC1.

Acer Philippines general manager Manuel Wong said the gaming zone will allow consumers to try out the power and versatility of Acer computers – be it for the enterprise, home or for the gaming enthusiasts.

Intel Philippines country manager Ricky Banaag said the newly open Core i7 gaming zone is the best processor on the planet powered gaming zone. “We (Intel) congratulates Acer, Microsoft and Villman for the launch of this new and exciting gaming zone.” said Banaag.

Microsost MNA consultant Lalaine Zulueta for her part said the new Gaming Zone will allow people to see the latest Windows 7 in action. “It is working efficiently and is ready to deliver the computing requirement of consumers” added Zulueta.

On the other hand, Villman Computers President Manuel ‘Boyet’ Villaroman said the objective of the Gaming Zone is really to allow people to get their hands wet on the latest computing innovation the market has to offer.

“The gaming zone will act as our showroom and at the same time a lab in a way. People can come and try the machines. Our fees are very affordable, just enough to cover our operation expenses.” said Villaroman.

Sony will soon include touchscreen functionality to a range of Vaio laptops – plus the upcoming Vaio W laptop will also be integrating PlayStation Network functionality.

Integration with the PlayStation Network will bring movies and TV shows directly to Vaio laptops and netbooks.

Samsung Electronics Co. reported a 5.2% rise in profit for the second quarter on 16% growth in sales driven primarily by improved performance in semiconductor and telecom business segments. Handsets shipments in the quarter rose 14%. Further, the South Korean conglomerate said it projects 5% sequential growth in telecom market demand in the third quarter.

Samsung added that its net profit topped 2.25 billion won (1.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the second quarter, marking a 5.2 percent on-year advance from 2.14 trillion won (1.7 billion U.S. dollars).

The rise in earnings came as the company’s sales was boosted 15.9 percent to 21.02 trillion won (16.8 billion U.S. dollars) during the same period.

The company expected its earnings to further improve in the third quarter

Nokia has announced their latest high profile mobile device the Nokia N86. The highlight of this phone is the 8 megapixel digital camera. This is the first phone from Nokia to feature such a high quality camera.

N86 features technologies like mechanical shutter and Automatic Motion Blur Reduction for better image quality. The camera features a Carl Zeiss wide angle lens along with LED Flash.

LG Electronics Posts Record Profit

LG Electronics announced that its second-quarter net profit surged 62 percent to a record high of more than 1 trillion won despite the global economic gloom.

LG earned 1.15 trillion won ($921 million) in the three months ended June 30. Its net profit remained at 707 billion won a year ago.

Sales in the April-June quarter rose 17 percent to a record 8.48 trillion won from 7.23 trillion won a year earlier.

The result was boosted strongly by sales of mobile handsets and flat-screen televisions.
