According to Gartner, worldwide shipments in the third quarter reached 80.9 million units, an increase of 0.5% from the third quarter of 2008, and an improvement over Gartner’s own forecast for a 5.6% decline in sales.

Hewlett-Packard Co. remains the world’s No. 1 PC company, with 16.1 million shipments and almost 20% of the market.

Acer Inc. surpassed Dell Inc. in the No. 2 slot for worldwide PC sales. Gartner said Acer sold 12.5 million PC in the quarter, an increase of 23.6% from last-year’s third quarter, and good enough for 15.4% of the market.

Dell’s shipments fell 6.7% from a year ago to 10.3 million PCs, giving it a 12.8% market share.

Lenovo, with 8.5% of the market, and Toshiba and its 5% market share rounded out the top five worldwide vendors.

Apple announces record profits

Apple impressed with its quarterly financial results, posting a fourth quarter profit of $1.67 billion or $1.82 per diluted share, up 47 percent from $1.14 billion or $1.26 per diluted share in the same quarter of last year.

The company easily beat analyst expectations of around $1.60 per share.

AMD offers Triple-core Athlon Chips

AMD has unveiled eight new Athlon II processors, out of which two are quad-core, four triple-core, and two dual-core desktop processors.

The new triple-core Athlon II processors are slotted between the dual-core and the quad-core chips. The new Athlon II chips are built on 45nm fabrication process and offer 64-bit instruction set support.

AMD aims to offer these processors for desktops, all-in-one PC and small form factor desktops.

PS3 tops game consoles

According to the September video game sales data released by the NPD research firm, Sony’s PlayStation 3 (PS3) gaming console managed to outsell the Nintendo Wii by nearly 30,000 units, mainly due to a PS3 price reduction and the introduction of the PS3 Slim.

Though the Nintendo DS retained its top slot as the leading console with 524,200 units sold during September; the sales figures of the Sony PS3 stood at 491,800 consoles vis-à-vis Nintendo Wii’s 462,800 units sold.

Acer announced its latest beTouch line of touchscreen smartphones, a series that is complimentary to its recently announced neoTouch lineup. The beTouch lineup includes Acer’s E100, E101, and E200 beTouch devices.

All three phones are powered by Windows Mobile 6.5 and include touchscreen functionality.
