RIM, Saudi Arabia Reach BlackBerry Deal

Posted: August 8, 2010 in Tech

Blackberry maker Research in Motion Ltd. and Saudi Arabia’s telecom regulator and local phone operators have reached a preliminary deal over the government’s access to and handling of BlackBerry data, according to media reports.

The deal would involve having the Canadian company set up a server in the Middle East kingdom, which has 700,000 BlackBerry users, Dow Jones Newswires reported Saturday, citing an unnamed person familiar with the talks.

Research in Motion has been pressured by governments in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and several countries in the Middle East region to give them greater access to the encrypted data sent by its smartphone devices. Authorities in the region have threatened to either ban the smartphone devices or block the Blackberry instant message services.
