A German security agency warned that a “critical weaknesses” in the Apple Inc. software could make users of iPhones, iPads and iPod touches open to theft of personal data.

The German Federal Office for Information Security said that simply by clicking on an infected PDF file while using Apple’s iOS operating system “is sufficient to infect the mobile device with malware without the user’s knowledge.”

Even opening a website that carries an infected PDF file could open Apple devices to criminals, the agency warned.

The security flaw allows attackers to infect users’ iOS devices with malicious software that would give them administrator privileges just by displaying infected PDF files.

Apple said it will address the security concern in a forthcoming update.
