Red Hat Linux security holes identified

RED HAT has discovered several new bugs in its Linux OS and has issued a security advisory rated ‘moderate’. Both enterprise and desktop systems are affected.

A flaw in the ISDN CAPI subsystem could potentially allow a remote user to cause a denial of service or privilege escalation and a glitch in the Bluetooth subsystem could result in a local user triggering an information leak.

All Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 users are advised to upgrade their kernels to the packages associated with their machine architecture and configurations.

Intel’s Penryn Chip Expected November

Intel is reportedly preparing to launch its anticipated 45nm quad-core Penryn processor on November 11. According to some, Penryn will come with clock speeds ranging from 2GHz to 3.16GHz operating on a 1333MHz frontside bus and packing 12MB of L2 cache.

According to Intel, Penryn is the first chip to use High-K and metal gate transistors, which reduces power consumption. All chips except for the 120W 3.16GHz model will have thermal ratings of 80W.

Sony launches Recycling Program

To encourage consumers to recycle and dispose of electronic devices in an environmentally sound manner, Sony has established a national recycling program for consumer electronics. The Sony Take Back Recycling Program allows consumers to recycle all Sony-branded products for no fee at 75 Waste Management (WM) Recycle America eCycling drop-off centers throughout the U.S.

The program, which begins on Sept. 15, was developed in collaboration with WM Recycle America, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. The program also allows consumers to recycle other manufacturers’ consumer electronics products at market prices, and may include a recycling fee for some types of materials.

Chinese IT company Founder Electronics Co., Ltd. is suing California-based Blizzard Entertainment for $13 million, claiming lost earnings from the unauthorized use of its fonts.

Founder claimed that Blizzard used five of Founder’s registered fonts for the Chinese characters were used in Blizzard’s online PC game World of Warcraft.
